The 2009 AAU Girls’ Basketball Super Showcases set the tone for the rest of the summer’s basketball festivities. The most elite freshman, sophomore, and junior girls competed toe to toe against one another for a shot at the crown. Though it had all the hype of March madness, no national championship was on the line. These girls played for the right, and the respect, to be called the best.

The freshman got things started as we rolled out the balls and prepared to go to work. The ladies banged and boarded with the best of them, combining defense, hustle, and pure shooting to win it all. Team Essence came out on top, outlasting the FBVA Orlando Comet Red 82-71.

Moving up, the Arizona Venom claimed gold over the Indiana Lady Legit in the Sophomore Showcase. Unable to contend, the Lady Legit let the Venom sink their teeth into the title without taking the court.

The Junior Showcase really began to heat things up. In two divisions, the ladies competed in the Junior Gold and the Junior Silver Showcases respectively. In the gold division, the BWSL Elite buckled down and took the Garner Flames-Morris by a dozen. The Gauchos came out of the lower bracket to spice the end of their tournament up, taking down the Orlando Comet Red for the lower bracket prize.

Sometimes in sports when two teams are evenly matched no clear winner can be decided. In boxing, a bout can end in a no decision. In soccer a game can end in a tie. In the Junior Silver division the CBC Next Level Red and the Tennessee Wings each took a share of the crown being named co-champions. In the lower bracket, however, the WWGulf Coast Eagles soared above the competition to end their tournament on a high.

All of the ladies in the 2009 AAU Girl’s Basketball Super Showcases put their skill on the showroom floor to wow the crowd. Congratulations to all of our competitors for showing their stuff as the best of the best, and an extra nod to those who took down the championship trophies.
