2009 AAU Girls’ Basketball Summer Championships Results
July 21st, 2009
She’s on fire! The ladies of the 2009 AAU Girls’ Basketball National Championships torched the twine at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fl. The girls tipped off the summer classics on July 5th and roared to a finish July 20th. For more than two weeks, the best female basketball players from ages eight to eighteen pulled out all of the stops en route to a national championship.
In the 8U President’s Cup, the Atlanta Cagers played bigger than their bodies claiming the gold. In front of a raucous crowd, the Cagers took down Team Ohio. These girls may be young, but they have skills to watch for years to come.
Two years their senior, the 10U DI championship was claimed in a hard fought battle between Tennessee’s Team Pride and the Indiana Blizzard. Putting on a gritty performance, the Pride held off a gutsy challenge to best the competition. In the 10U’s DII final, the Tennessee Lady Diamonds proved nothing is harder than diamond as they bested the North Carolina Ballin’ Divas. For photos from the 10U girls’ games, click here.
The 15U DII championships were nothing to sleep on either. During the week, the South Carolina Lowcountry Ballers and Southern Ohio Magic danced through the competition to their final paring. Taking the lead, the Ballers maintained their nine point advantage to the top of the podium.
While all of the age divisions were hot, the 16U bracket was on fire! On championship game day, back to back to back games took the crowd’s breath away as three games in a row were decided by one possession. The final minutes of each game were edge of your seat action with teams taking gold in the DI and DII divisions. The DI division title was duked out between the Georgia Elite and the Memphis Elite squads. With only a few minutes left in regulation, Georgia commanded a five point lead, but Memphis would not be denied. Battling back from their deficit, the Memphis Elite rose to the challenge taking the title 63-59.
The DII championship was an all Carolina affair with the Carolina Cougars of S.C. taking on the Carolina Elite hailing from the Tar Heel State. The Elite tamed the Cougars’ bite as they outlasted a frantic feline team to take the championship 63-60.
Special props go out to the participants of the DI bronze and copper contest for being the game of the tournament. The Michigan Pistons took on Florida’s FBVA Comets-Red in an instant classic. After 29 minutes and 50.4 seconds, the Pistons held a one point advantage with under ten seconds to play. The Comets-Red shook left and right to get off a well defended shot that went errant with just seconds hanging in the balance. Miraculously, another Comets-Red player pulled down the offensive rebound and put up a fall away jumper as time expired, stealing the bronze from the Piston’s grasp.
