A Strong Finish at the Track in Reno
July 23rd, 2009“Go West young man, haven’t you been told,” Reno’s full of medals-bronze, silver, and gold! The 2009 AAU West Coast Junior Olympic Games Track and Field competition was a huge success. The fourth year of the West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games saw both Track & Field and Multi-Events/Racewalk continue to grow above and beyond the mark. In its first two years, the event was held in Davis, California, migrating to Reno last summer returning again this summer for more action.
After a spectacular inaugural track and field competition in 2008, the AAU once again raised the bar. This summer’s meet saw the competitors arrive in waves; managing to nearly double and surpassing the amount of participants from the previous year’s competition. With competitors arriving from thirteen states, the games also expanded in their structure as well. The mass influx of contestants propelled the meet to be the largest AAU Track and Field competition west of the Missouri River. 2009 also allowed the first year for competitors to compete in Multi-Events/Racewalk, showcasing their skills in more than one area.
With such a phenomenal showing, the games were bound to be extraordinary. As the AAU stepped up its game to put on a bigger and better competition for its athletes, they responded by raising their level of competition to match their Host’s vigor. Nearly 200 records were shattered or set in the four day competition. That averages out to almost 50 records a day! The extraordinary athletes from the West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games punched their tickets and are heading to the mid-west. With their wins, the top six finishers qualified for the big show-the 2009 AAU National Junior Olympic Games in Des Moines, Iowa held at the beginning of August.
The event was impossible to miss, and was well documented by the local media. Newspapers and television reporters from the area were on site to further document the spectacle that was the West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games.
