AAU Dance
September 9th, 2009Turn up the music and tune into AAU Dance! If you are interested in showing off your best moves, join AAU Dance. We offer a
variety of Dance opportunities such as: Swing, Dance & Drill, Clogging and DanceSport & Ballroom.
Here is a little history about the different Dances we offer. In the 1920s Swing Dance and/or Lindy Hop developed from the group partner dancing to Swing Jazz Music full of crochets and quavers in rhythm. Clogging was created from aspects of English, Irish, German and Cherokee steps mixed with African rhythms and movement. During the roaring 20s more than 150 High Schools had “pep squads” to cheer the home team to victory.
Eventually these pep squads added wood carved rifles and drill step routines thus creating Dance & Drill Teams. Before radio and television, Balls were very important social events and couples danced in a “closed hold” position, maintaining 5 areas of contact. Standard Ballroom dances have diverse origins of rhythms, tempos and aesthetics.
The purpose of the AAU Dance Program is to create, stimulate and improve competitive opportunities for our athletes while promoting and developing leadership sportsmanship and educational experiences. Using the theme, “Sports For All, Forever” as the foundation, our national dance committee is continually striving to expand our programming offerings.
