AAU New York Metropolitan Governor, Cecil K. Watkins, passed away Saturday morning, October 10, 2009, losing his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was dedicated to the promotion and development of amateur sports programs his entire life. Mr. Watkins also served as the Boys Basketball District Sport Director and was a member of the AAU Boys Basketball National Council.

Professionally, Mr. Watkins was the President and CEO of the National Pro-Am City Leagues Association, Incorporated, a non-profit community service organization that specializes in developing and administering turnkey sports league programs.

Previously, he served as the director of recreation for New York City’s Department of Parks and Recreation, director of community and special programs for the NBA, and served in the Army as a recreation specialist.

Achievements awarded to Mr. Watkins include:
Inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame
Basketball Congress International Commissioner of the Year Award
Queensboro President Lifetime Achievement Award
2007 AAU Presidential Leadership Award
2005 Boys Basketball Vision Award

The AAU will miss Governor Watkins and we appreciate his service of over 30 years. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family.

Private funeral arrangements are being made. A memorial service will follow.

Memorial Service For Cecil Watkins
The service will be held on Sunday, November 1 at 3:00 PM at the Adelphi University Gymnasium. Bobby Dodd, The President and CEO of AAU, will be one of the speakers paying tribute to Cecil.
