WINTERVILLE — Shaela Churchill has excelled on the softball diamond, the volleyball court and in the classroom at South Central for the last three and a half years.
Now she’s ready to take her game to Buies Creek.
The South Central senior signed a letter of intent to play softball at Campbell on Thursday. She will start attending the school next fall.
“I’m pretty excited,” said Churchill, who was recently named the female Wendy’s High School Heisman winner for the state of North Carolina. “I’ve worked hard and had a lot of fun with all of my friends, teammates and coaches. I’m just so thankful for all of them for getting me here because I didn’t do it by myself.”
Many of her friends and coaches were on hand at the South Central library Thursday, including Walt Davis, who coached Churchill in softball as a sophomore two years ago.
“She is a first-class person and she is what the term student-athlete means,” Davis said of Churchill, who plays second base for the Falcons. “I probably couldn’t find one person in this school that would say one thing bad about her.
“I think her work ethic on the softball field and in the classroom is why she’s getting rewarded for what she’s done.”
Churchill said that she has attended numerous softball camps at Campbell and really started to show interest in the school this summer. She said that the more she learned about the school and the softball program through visits, the more she wanted to attend the university.
“The thing that I like most about Campbell is that it’s a Christian school, and that means a lot to me and my family,” Churchill said. “I also hung out with the team a little bit when I was at camp and really enjoyed being around them and the environment.”
Churchill not only excelled at SC, but has played on the Carolina Diamonds AAU softball team in recent years. Diamonds’ coach Ken Andrews said Churchill is like a coach on the softball field.
“I’ve seen tremendous improvement in her,” Andrews said. “She had always been quick and always been smart, but she has gained a lot of strength and knowledge over the years.”
Churchill plans on majoring in education at Campbell.
