BHS (Brighton high School) cross country coach John Martinez (also Colorado AAU Athletics Director) addresses the hall of fame dinner.
In his speech, Martinez was overcome with emotion and thanked his coach at the time, James “Spank” Blasing for recruiting him to come to the school, for changing Martinez’ life and for making it possible for Martinez to have a career in track and field.
Martinez, a distance runner at the then-Southern Colorado State College, was the school’s first All-American miler in 1966 and was the first of 34 All-Americans in a 35-year span at the Pueblo school.
