Logan Downey, who attends Central Park Elementary in Plantation, recently took first place his age group in the platform event, and second place in the three-meter and one-meter springboard events at the Amateur Athletic Union National Diving Championship in Coral Springs.
With close to 800 entrants from across the country competing at that city’s Aquatics Center, Downey emerged as a national champion for the third straight year. The 10-year-old is also a 12-time AAU All-American diver for the collective three events over a four-year span.
Just three weeks removed from being in a car accident, Logan gave his medal to his younger brother Caleb, who was injured in the same accident.
“It was a happenstance, spontaneous type of thing,” said Stuart Downey, the father of the boys. “It was pretty emotional because they are pretty close in age and they’ve always had a sibling rivalry. Both are divers so it was very exciting for Caleb to get the medal.”
Coached by Paul Breitfeller and Jennifer Floyd, Downey competes for the multi-time national champion Plantation dive team.
