Angels hang on, take AAU Girls Basketball 11th DI National Championship

Written by: Kelli Carroll

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL- The 11th Grade Girls DI National Championship wrapped up last night at the ESPN Wide World of Sports between Angels Basketball and Saratoga Sparks.

The Angles went on a 8-0 run to start the game and control most of the first quarter. But in the second quarter, the Sparks tied the game with a three-pointer– once to tie things up at 18 all, and then again at 20. Sparks would take their first lead of the game at 22-21 and hold on for the remainder of the quarter, until a basket off the inbound by Amber Donnes took the Angles up 23-22 going into halftime.

Third quarter opened up with the Angles going on a 18-5 run. The Sparks refused to give up though. In the 4th quarter, the Sparks hustled their way back into the game. Bridget Murphy hit two back-to-back 3-pointers  with 1:21 left in regulation to bring the Sparks within five points of the Angles. The Angles drew a foul and hit one of the two free throw shots to go up six points. The Sparks rebounded the missed free throw shot and found an open Bridget Murphy for another three-pointer, bringing the Sparks within three points with one minute left to play. The Sparks however, would not be able to close the gap.

With the Angles in the double bonus, they were able to hold off the Sparks in the final seconds of the game by sinking their foul shots. The Angles would go on to win 53-46 and be crowned the 2012 AAU 11th Grade Girls Basketball DI Champions.
